Peel board launches Student Census in November

Peel board launches Student Census in November

At the Peel District School Board, we are committed to providing the very best learning environments so that all students can achieve personal excellence. In order to do this, we must truly understand the needs of students and their families. To help us in this work, we will launch our first Student Census in November.

View a letter sent home with K-3 students, and a letter sent home with grade 4 to 12 students.

The census findings will help the board and our schools to:

  • better understand student populations and school communities.
  • identify and eliminate barriers to student success, inclusion and well-being.
  • establish effective programs and reallocate resources to where they are needed most.

Who will participate?

Students in grades 4 to 12 will be invited to complete the Student Census in class during Nov. 19 to 30, 2018. The questionnaire will take approximately one class period to complete, and will include questions that ask students about themselves and their experiences in and outside of school.

Parents/guardians of students in kindergarten to grade 3 will receive the questionnaire in early November to fill out on behalf of their child(ren) by Nov. 30. Parents/guardians with multiple children in kindergarten to grade 3 will be asked to fill out a separate questionnaire for each child.

Is participation mandatory?

We want to capture the voices of all students - the more Student Census responses we receive, the more effective the data will be to help inform and improve programming and instruction. That being said, the Student Census is voluntary. A letter was sent home during the week of Oct. 15 with all grade 4 to 12 students. If you do not want your child to participate, please return the slip on the bottom of this letter by Nov. 14.

How will responses be kept confidential and private?

The Student Census is confidential, but not anonymous. All collected responses will be stored in a secure, confidential database and will only be accessed by authorized Peel board research staff to identify and summarize trends among Peel students.

When the census is distributed to students and parents/guardians, it will include an insert with the student’s name and instructions. This is the only page with the student’s name. Students or parents/guardians will be instructed to remove this insert before submitting their completed census. The completed questionnaires will have no personally identifiable information on them and will be sealed by the student or parent/guardian in an envelope.
