Tips to maintain well-being over the holidays

Tips to maintain well-being over the holidays

The holiday season can be a joyous time but it can also be challenging. Get more enjoyment out of this holiday season by focusing deliberately on self-care. Here are some helpful tips to get you and your family started.

Put your own well-being at the top of the "to do" list

Set aside time for yourself and do something simple like getting outdoors and going for a short walk or having a nap. Do a little something each day that your truly enjoy doing. Include your family or friends if that brings you joy.

Maintain positivity

Remember that no holiday is perfect and we should strive for joy rather than perfection. Encourage everyone in your life to focus on all the great things about the holiday season. Ask, "what are 2 great things about today?" to diffuse any negativity and shift the focus.

If you are alone for the holidays do something positive for yourself. Cook a nice meal that you will enjoy, have a good book or movie to watch, or enjoy the outdoors. If possible, consider volunteering so that you spend time with others and meet a community need.

Healthy body

Getting enough sleep, keeping up with your regular activity routine, using relaxation techniques, and eating and drinking with moderation will help give you the stamina to get through the demands of the season.

Attitude of gratitude

If you are fortunate enough to spend the holidays with someone close to you be grateful. Many others are not so fortunate and this can be a difficult time to be alone or separated from loved ones. If you know someone who will be alone over the holidays, one of the kindest things you can do is get in touch. Even if it's just a hello over social media, it can make a big difference to them and will make you feel better too.
