Parent resources help you support your child’s learning

Parent resources help you support your child’s learning

In October 2014, the Peel District School Board sought input from families to help guide the development of resources that help parents and caregivers support their children's learning. The result is a new Help Your Child online resource centre on the Peel board's website with the topics families said were important to them.

Things to remember about the Fraser Institute's Report

Things to remember about the Fraser Institute's Report

The Fraser Institute's Report Card on Ontario's Elementary Schools uses grade 3 and grade 6 Education Quality & Accountability Office (EQAO) test results to calculate each school's overall rating out of 10. As presented, the ratings in the report provide an incomplete and distorted picture of school effectiveness. Learn more here: http://www.peelschools.org/…/fraserreport/Pages/default.aspx

RTMS Little Free Library

RTMS Little Free Library

The RTMS Little Free Library is almost ready to go! Ms. Latta and the Art Council have been busy designing and painting our recycled newspaper box that will soon be filled with books for students, staff and community members to borrow. The box will first be placed in the RTMS foyer and then, once spring arrives, outside the front doors of the school for the entire community to access.
The basic premise of a Little Free Library is, "Take a book, leave a book." You don't need to scan a library card, pay money or even ask permission to borrow a book. When you see something you like, take it! The next time you're passing by, return the book you borrowed or drop off a different book (or two) to add to the Little Free Library collection.
Find more information at the following websites:
littlefreelibrary.rtms.ca
littlefreelibrary.org
And don't forget to follow us on twitter: @rtmslibrary
Stay tuned for the announcement of our official opening sometime in the next few weeks.
Parents' Book Club

Parents' Book Club

Starting February 17th, parents are invited to join the RTMS Parents' Book Club. We will be reading and discussing Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Every class at RTMS read this novel last year and students and staff all agreed it was one of the most enjoyable and moving novels they have read. It also speaks to many of the character education themes we talk about during Thompson Time every year. You will love this heartwarming story as much as we did, I'm sure!

We will meet to explore the book on Tuesdays: February 17th, February 24th, March 3rd and March 10th from 9:35 am to 10:20 am. Books, coffee, tea and treats will be provided!

Join the Parents' Book Club to meet others in your community, learn more about the teaching strategies we use at RTMS, show your kids that reading for fun is important at any age and to just make the winter months pass by a little quicker!

If you would like to join, please click on the link below and complete the survey:

Happy Reading , RTMS parents.

Excellence in Eloquence

Excellence in Eloquence

Once again Ruth Thompson will be participating in the Excellence in Eloquence Challenge.  This year marks the thirteenth year of the program.  Ms. Spiliotopoulos and Mr. Greenwood will be leading the challenge which will begin in February.  Speeches on a variety of topics will be prepared and presented in March and our final winners will be selected at a school assembly in April.  Our school winners for both the Junior (grade 6) and Intermediate (grade 7 and 8) will then move on to the Regional Finals.

The top three intermediate participants from each Regional competition will be invited to participate in the Board-wide Finals on Wednesday, May 6th, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at McCrimmon M.S.   The top two participants from each junior Regional competition will be invited to participate in the Board-wide Finals on Thursday, May 7th, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at Oscar Peterson P.S.

At the Peel Finals, the first place winner will receive a personal plaque and a permanent plaque for her/his school. Second and third place winners will also receive personal plaques. Medals will be awarded to runner-ups.  Dale Carnegie Training has generously donated a trophy, which will travel to the winning school each year.  The first place winner will also be invited to address the Director and Trustees at the Peel District School Board.

Our school has been witness to some very outstanding speeches over the years.  We have had students receive accolades for their performances and have had students place in the top five at the Peel Finals.  We look forward to another successful competition.
