Our Mission

Our mission describes our school's purpose. Our vision depicts our desired future. The principles needed to achieve our mission and vision are articulated in our values. Finally, the actions we need to demonstrate to make our mission, vision and values a reality are described in our collective commitments.

We have developed these statements in collaboration with our staff, students and families. They are part of our School Success Plan.


Ruth Thompson Middle School, a "lighthouse" middle school community, is dedicated to learning, leading, giving, and succeeding -together.

Staff Commitments

  • a dynamic, inclusive middle school philosphy where all voices are heard and valued. Team planning and shared program are a focus.
  • a strong, school wide, planned agenda and Teacher Advisory Program with a focus on goal setting, time management and character education.
  • the use of reflection as a tool for learning and growing as part of the RTMS Assessment Portfolio Project and student led conferencing school wide.
  • excellent classroom programs offering a wide variety of teaching and learning strategies, cross curricular connections, and rich assessment practices.
  • integrating technology effectively across the curriculum.

Student Commitments

  • follow the Ruth Thompson Promise in striving to become positive, giving, and productive citizens for tomorrow.
  • attend school regularly and arrive to class on time, prepared for the learning ahead. Seek help as needed.
  • complete homework and assignments on time and to the best of our ability. Follow the school standards to the best of our ability.

Parent Commitments

  • we will remain committed to the success of every child in our school.
  • we will participate in student led conferencing and goal setting, to assist in the understanding and meeting of our childrens' needs,
  • we will provide a quiet and well equipped workspace at home, and assist as needed, in meeting with the school Homework Policy
  • we will learn about our children through School Council, volunteerism, information evenings, and support of the classroom and special events.
  • we will seek to engage our community e.g. Community Connections, Parent Evenings, English classes, in order to help our students be more successful.
