The morning of Monday, January 24, 2010,
was a special learning time for both staff and students at Whitehorn.
All classroom teachers had the opportunity to meet with representatives
from the Ministry of Education to discuss ways to improve teaching and learning
for our students. At the same time, students had the pleasure of
attending a “Stand Up For Respect” assembly, an interactive presentation which
supports our school-wide initiative of implementing the Character Education
During the “Stand Up for Respect” assembly, the school gym
was transformed into an on-location studio for ATFM’s live radio program,
featuring the animated DJ, Benny. Through songs and videos, Benny engaged the
students as they learned all about what it means to show respect.
He created meaningful scenarios that our students could relate and
respond to. Benny incorporated role-play to demonstrate how to
prevent and deal with bullying, featuring our very own Grade 5 students: Amber,
Ethan, Gukaran, Ladursa, Sarah and Varun. The themes of inclusion, acceptance
and fairness were highlighted, and students eagerly participated in the
