Letter to familes - Board approves recommendations for Pupil Accommodation Review for Caledon elementary schools

At the Regular Meeting of the Board on April 12, 2017, Peel District School Board trustees approved the recommendations in the Final Staff Report for the Pupil Accommodation Review for Alloa, Alton, Belfountain, Caledon Central, and Credit View public schools. Dear Alloa, Alton, Belfountain, Caledon Central, and Credit View Families,

I am writing to let you know that last night Peel District School Board trustees approved the following recommendations related to the Pupil Accommodation Review taking place in your school community:

Credit View Public School will close at the end of this school year
Effective September 2017, Credit View students in kindergarten to grade 6 will be redirected to Belfountain Public School, and grade 7 to 8 students will attend Alloa Public School

Boundary changes for Alton and Belfountain Public School
See attached maps to view recommended boundary changes. Effective September 2017, students living in the shaded area would attend Alton Public School for kindergarten to grade 6. Current Belfountain students in grade 5 would be provided the option of remaining at Belfountain for the 2017-18 school year, along with their siblings. For the 2018-19 school year, grade 6 students would move on to Caledon Central for grade 7 and 8, and their younger siblings would be directed to Alton.

Peel board staff will now prepare a transition plan that will include timelines for implementation and the support available to staff and students moving to their new school sites.

In addition, transition committees will be formed, comprised of appropriate Board staff and parents. These committees will develop plans for items of historical significance, the control, reclamation and disposition of a closing school's inventory, maintaining appropriate records and building a collaborative culture in the consolidated sites.

You may be wondering about what will happen to staff at your child's school. There will be minimal impact for staff at Alloa, Alton, Belfountain and Caledon Central public schools. Credit View teaching staff will follow an amended staffing process that has been agreed upon by the Peel board and the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario/Peel Elementary Teachers' Local, as required by the 2014-2017 collective agreement for pupil accommodation reviews. Credit View non-teaching staff will be declared excess as part of the normal staffing process. Rest assured, as is our normal practice, the board will be working closely with our federation and unions throughout this process to provide support and assistance needed to affected employees.

I understand that some of these changes can be upsetting. However, as you know, the prime guiding factor for the Peel board during this accommodation review was to best meet the learning needs of all students in this area. The changes being implemented include input we received from school communities. In fact, the recommendations approved by trustees reflect some of the feedback received at the public meeting that took place on February 6, 2017.

I would like to thank you for all of the feedback you have provided throughout this process. Your participation was vital – so thank you for the effort and time you have contributed. We will keep you up-to-date and share any new information as it becomes available as we move through the implementation process.
