Back-to-school message from Director of Education: Happy new school year!

Back-to-school message from Director of Education: Happy new school year!

Welcome to the 2018-19 school year—endless opportunities to learn, grow and succeed await you and your child!

As we head into a new school year, we remain committed to the Peel District School Board's five-year strategic plan, the Plan for Student Success, with student success and well-being at the core of everything we do. This remains true for our work around the province's recent changes to the elementary Health and Physical Education (HPE) curriculum.

I know some of you are wondering how the HPE curriculum will be taught in your child's class. This school year, students from grades 1 to 8 will be taught the 2010 HPE curriculum, re-issued by the provincial government in late August 2018. This version was last taught in 2014. Secondary school students will still learn from the 2015 curriculum.

Rest assured that, as a school board, we will continue to be guided by our moral obligation to ensure all students feel safe and included in our school communities. We have a responsibility to do so, under the Ontario Human Rights Code, the Education Act and the board's policies and procedures. Before the curriculum is taught in class, your child's teacher will receive resources to help deliver lessons in ways that align with ministry direction and human rights legislation, while also fostering learning spaces that are safe, inclusive and focused on student success and well-being. Additional information about the curriculum will be sent to you in the coming weeks.

In education, we have a great opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of students, their families and the world. Every day in Peel schools, students discover who they are and who they can become. In order for students to thrive, they must have the passion, strength and belief that they can become anything and do anything. But that belief—that confidence—isn't just "there." It is nurtured by those who surround them.

As our partners in education, you—as parents/guardians—play a key role in your child's success. We value your involvement and want you to know it's appreciated. As always, if you have any questions about your child's education, I encourage you to raise them with your child's teacher so we can best serve their needs. You can also learn other ways to get involved by speaking with your School Council or visiting www.peelschools.org/parents/involved

As Director of Education, it is an absolute privilege to serve this community, to find joy in the little and big accomplishments of staff, students and their families, and to celebrate these with you. You can view some of these #peelproud moments on www.sharethesmile.ca

On behalf of the Peel board, I wish you and your family an amazing school year.

Peter Joshua,

Director of Education
