Annual Report

Roberta Bondar School Council

for the 2011-12 School Year

Roberta Bondar School Council is pleased to announce that 2011-12 was a very rewarding year.  In the upcoming school year, we are already looking forward to continuing to support the success of students at our school.

The school council is a group of parents, staff and community members focused on promoting student achievement and enhancing the learning environment. By making recommendations directly to our principal and school board, council members can make a real difference in our school and community.  We are focused on supporting the Roberta Bondar School Success Plan.

All school council meetings are open to the public and we encourage input from everyone in our school community.  If you would like to become part of our team or have a suggestion for the council, we welcome you to attend an upcoming meeting.

Sincerely,

Jivan Malhi

Activity Summary

As a council, we focus our work on activities to support Parent Collective Commitments, Literacy and the Balanced Calendar.  Each year, at our annual open house, parents are asked to sign the Parent Collective Commitments that were collectively created by School Council in 2010.  These are the following:

  • Ensure open lines of communication between staff, parents and children
  • Ensure academic consistency by supporting children with homework and other academic work (eg provide a positive environment to support study at home; ensure children are on time and prepared for class)
  • Supporting and spreading the concept of the Balanced Calendar
  • Respecting, understanding and promoting multiculturalism by learning about and celebrating all faith traditions

At the start of the school year the School Council hosted a potluck as part of the Open House. This event is an opportunity for the Parent community to meet the staff of Roberta Bondar and provides the school with a strong presence within the community.  For 2012-2013, we have somewhat changed the format.  We will hold a BBQ during the open house.

The Out Reach Calendar is something which was initially suggested by the School Council.  The School Council continues to promote this calendar every year as a way of reaching out to our Parent community and to enhance the well-being of our students.  We have supported the calendar financially by using Parent Engagement Funds to purchase prizes for the monthly draws and by providing feedback to help make the calendar for the next year even better.

At Mother’s Day School Council hosts an annual Rose Sales fundraiser.  Volunteers helped with counting forms, money and delivering the Roses to classes the Friday before Mother’s Day.  This fundraiser raised approximately $450 this year and the funds were used to support the Forest of Reading program to purchase medals and books for the students.

This year we tried a new fundraiser.  It was a Scrap Metal Drive.  We found this event turned out to be a huge success and supported our Eco-Schools initiative by diverting over 15 000 pounds of scrap away from landfill.  The fundraiser raised over $1600 which will be used to support our school library.
