Update on Elementary Teacher Job Action - November 14, 2019

Update on Elementary Teacher Job Action - November 14, 2019

Over the next few days, you will hear and see media reports about pending elementary and secondary teacher job action. Although the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) has announced that it will begin work-to-rule strike action on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2019, at this time, we don't yet have any details on what the work-to-rule will look like in the Peel District School Board. However, ETFO has announced that its actions will target the Ministry of Education and school board administrative tasks that do not impact students.

As we learn more, we will share details with you so that you have the information as quickly as possible. We appreciate your ongoing understanding as we continue to work to support all Peel board learners.

Testing for lead in school water sources

Testing for lead in school water sources

Recently, some news outlets have reported about lead levels found in drinking water in Ontario schools. It is important that we clarify that the Peel District School Board's test results shared in these articles are from the 2016-17 and 2017-18 school years, and have already been resolved. All of our elementary and secondary schools are currently in compliance with requirements of Ontario's Safe Drinking Water Act.
Use of personal devices in Peel District School Board schools

Use of personal devices in Peel District School Board schools

On Nov. 4, 2019, the Ministry of Education introduced a restriction on the use of personal mobile devices, such as cellphones, in the classroom. It's being referred to as a "cellphone ban" in the media, however, the ministry's direction does allow personal devices to be used for instructional purposes, as directed by an educator. Exceptions are also made if cellphones are required for health or medical purposes, to support special education needs. This direction aligns with the Peel District School Board's current practice and, as such, there is no change to the use of technology in Peel schools.
