Excellence in Eloquence Speech Competition @ Plum Tree!

Excellence in Eloquence Speech Competition @ Plum Tree!

Excellence in Eloquence comes to Plum Tree Park!

Students in the Junior and Intermediate grades were busy writing, practising and presenting speeches during the month of April and May in conjunction with Peel's 16th annual public speaking challenge, Excellence in Eloquence.  Students were encouraged to research non-fiction topics that were of interest to them, integrating their opinions, experiences and research into their speech.  They presented the information in a 3-5 minute speech to their teacher and peers.

At Plum Tree Park we have MANY talented students who rose to the challenge, making it very difficult for their teachers to choose 2 representatives for the grade level.  Each grade had the opportunity to listen to the 2 representatives from each class, and then teachers for that grade in turn chose 2 students to represent the grade.  On Tuesday April 11th, Junior students eagerly came to the Purple Gym to listen to the 2 students from grades 4, 5 and 6 present their speeches to a panel of Plum Tree Judges.

Each of these students did a wonderful job and made the task of selecting a winner very difficult.  Congratulations are extended to Olivia (Mme Heanue), Sophie (Mme Jummun), Haadia (Mr. Locker) Ausaf ( Mrs. Young), Cem (Mme Samson) and Milena (Mlle Geier) for a fantastic job of presenting your speeches.

In the end, it was Ausaf's speech about Justin Trudeau which won the judges over.  He did a wonderful job sharing information and expressing why he loves the Prime Minster.   Ausaf then moved on to representing Plum Tree at the regional competition, where he presented his speech in front of parents, teachers, administrators, community members, friends and  lots of family!  On Thursday, April 27th.  Ausaf was well poised and presented his speech well, and should be congratulated for all his success.

Every student who participated in the process of writing and presenting a speech is to be commended.  The entire community at PTP was supportive of the process and a big thank you is extended to our judges (Ms. Khan, Ms. Parasram, Mme McMurrich, Ms. Naughton, Mme Rocheford, Mme Wasag.

Of course we have to thank the parents and Plum Tree community who supported the process by listening countless times to your child prepare their speech…thank you to everyone for making the Excellence in Eloquence Speech Competition at Plum Tree a success!

Sincerely,

Mme Walcott

March Math Challenge for Students to Complete

Please see the attached math challenge for this month on our school website when you click on Newsletters.

Please encourage your child to complete the question and submit their work to the Office if they like so we can share samples of solutions on our interactive math bulletin board and enter your child's name into our monthly draw to win a prize for their participation.

The math challenges each month are completely OPTIONAL, but we encourage involvement of all our students and like to celebrate their learning on our math bulletin board.

Thank you

Therapy Dog Visiting Plum Tree

Therapy Dog Visiting Plum Tree

Dear Plum Tree Families,

St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Division in Mississauga is delighted to be coming to Plum Tree Park in a partnership between the school and our Community Service Unit.

It will be our pleasure to introduce Fran Archambault and her dog, Jinx.  They will begin visiting Plum Tree Park Public School next Wednesday, December 7th at 1:00 p.m. in one of our Resource Rooms to meet with a small group of students.

Fran Archambault and her dog, Jinx have taken part in our Therapy Dog Child Test Evaluation and have passed all the necessary testing to visit children.  This experience will give the children the enjoyment of getting to know Jinx and learning more about our program, our beautiful canines and what we do to help those in the community through our visits.

St. John Ambulance is the oldest charity in the world and makes every effort to ensure the safety and well being of our clients and volunteers.  We are pleased that Jinx has met our rigorous standards.  Great care is taken in the selection of dogs for our programs involving children.  They are tested for temperament and therapeutic qualities.  Please enjoy the fun, friendship, therapeutic benefits and unconditional love that will come to you when Fran Archambault and Jinx visit.

Thanks.
