3.   EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING:

Consists of planned learning activities that take place outside of the traditional classroom setting to enable SHSM students to find out about opportunities and careers available to them. These activities can include job shadowing, job twinning, work experience, virtual work experience and cooperative education.

o    One-on-one observation of a cooperative education student in a placement in the Arts and Culture sector
o    A day-long observation of a person working in the music industry (job-shadowing)
o    A one- or two-week work experience with a member of an industry association or a professional sector
o    Participation in a local, provincial or national competition for the arts
o    Attendance at college or university classes in the student’s area of interest
o    Attendance at a retail show, conference, or workshop focusing on the construction sector
o    A tour of a local theatre, museum, studio, or art gallery

 4.     "REACH AHEAD" ACTIVITIES:

Apprenticeship: visiting an approved apprenticeship delivery agent in the sector

College: interviewing a college student enrolled in a sector-specific program

University: observing a university class in a sector-related program

Workplace: interviewing an employee in the sector or helping an artist or musician prepare for a show or performance

All Pathways: volunteering at a community arts festival or concert

5.   ONTARIO SKILLS PASSPORT:

The Ontario Skills Passport (OSP) provides clear descriptions of Essential Skills and work habits and includes videos and tasks that show how people use these skills in everyday life and on-the-job. SHSM students will use the OSP tools and resources to assess, build, document and track their skills and transfer them to further education, training, the workplace and everyday life.

Students pursuing a SHSM will track their development of Essential Skills and work habits in their OSP Work plan throughout their experiential learning activities (including cooperative education placements and “reach ahead” experiences.)
