Dear Chinguacousy Parents & Guardians,
Happy New Year! 2012 will be an exciting year for the Chinguacousy community, as our new building addition will be completed within a few months. In September, all Chinguacousy students, including those in our new Regional SciTech program, will enjoy our 8 science labs, 2 technology shops, dance studio and 9 classrooms in the building addition, complete with new equipment and technology. Our staff has spent several years working diligently on the plans for the addition and SciTech, and we are all looking forward to the grand opening in September 2012, which will bring about new and engaging opportunities for all of our students.
This newsletter accompanies the final report card for semester one. It details final marks in semester one courses, with comments designed to explain your son’s or daughter’s achievement in each course, and learning skill levels that provide information on the transferable skills and traits that are required for success in school, the workplace and throughout life. I encourage you to review the marks, comments, learning skills and attendance data with your son or daughter, celebrating their successes, and setting goals in areas that would benefit from extra attention. We need to work together to support the expectation of regular attendance in all classes, on time, which leads to academic success. Please ensure that we have accurate contact phone numbers so that our daily automated call-out system can keep you updated on your child’s attendance. Web access is also available to parents, so that they can log in and check their son’s or daughter’s attendance on line. If you have not yet signed up for this service, please drop by our attendance office to pick up the required forms.
Progress Reports for the second semester will be sent home on Tuesday, March 20th. We look forward to following up with you at our Parents’ Night on Thursday, March 29th, which provides an important opportunity to review your son’s or daughter’s achievement and collaborate on plans to increase his or her success in school.
Course selection for the 2012-2013 school year is almost complete. As the courses that students select at this time determine how we staff the school next year, it is extremely important that students choose their courses wisely, carefully considering prerequisites and future pathways. Questions about this process should be addressed to our guidance counselors as soon as possible, as option sheets were due at the end of January.
February is Black History Month, and we have a variety of displays, assemblies and special events planned throughout the month to recognize and celebrate important people, events and contributions. We will also have an Early Release Day on Wednesday, February 8th, and celebrate Family Day with a holiday on Monday, February 20th. I hope that February represents the start of a successful second semester and a wonderful 2012 for all of our students and their families!
