April 2013

Moderns Department

The Languages department has spring fever!  Students have been working hard improving their language skills, and hard work has its rewards.

On April 24th, grade 9 students studying French will attend Clarkson’s very own Café Français. Students will take in a French Film while enjoying hot and tasty crêpes.  Délicieux!

On February 19th, French Immersion and French Core senior students attended the annual Cinefranco French Film Festival at the Bloor Street Cinema in Toronto.  Students watched the French film Les Vacances de Ducobu.  We had a fabulous time!  In May, our grade 10 core French students will be visiting Le Papillon and the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Also in May, students studying Spanish will be learning how to salsa and merengue, savour authentic Hispanic cuisine and catch a live flamenco dance show at Plaza Flamingo in Toronto. This semester, grade 10 students will be making piñatas and grade 11 students will be making maracas. ¡Qué divertido!  The grade 11 class will also be testing out their culinary skills by making authentic Hispanic cuisine.

On February 15th, all language classes celebrated Clarkson's Language Day with culture, quizzes and contest! Yummy prizes were enjoyed by the savviest students and teachers!  We look forward to having even more fun in our language classes in 2013-2014!

On April 8th, three Clarkson students participated in the Concours d'art oratoire, French Public Speaking Competition at the Regional level held at the Peel District School Board. Honourable mention goes to Talha Mukhtar who placed third in Core French Category.  Liam Bekirsky and Jounaid Lyaghfouri  finished top in their respective categories.  Please wish Jounaid and Liam bonne chance as they move onto the Provincial competition to be held on May 11th  at Glendon - York University Campus.

On April 17th, Liam Bekirsky will also be participating in the University of Toronto French Contest.  We hope to bring back the trophy to Clarkson's Immersion Program two years in a row!

French Senior Scholars is up and running.  Senior students studying French are available to tutor students who are in need of extra help. Students can focus on a variety of areas such as improving grammar, writing skills, pronunciation and reading comprehension skills.  They are available every Tuesday and Thursday in room 217, from 11:20 a.m. to 11:50 a.m.

Many thanks to OISE teacher candidate, Amirah Zubair, who recently completed  a seven-week practicum with Ms. Maika's grade nine classes. We wish her well in her future teaching career. We extend a warm welcome to former Clarkson Charger, Emily Speziale, from Brock University. She will be joining Mme Malmsten and Mme Loutrianakis as a student teacher for the month of April.   Merci! ¡Gracias!
