An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is developed for each exceptional student. It outlines specific educational goals and expectations for that student. An IEP must be developed within the first 30 days of the student being identified as exceptional and it is a working document, intended to be amended and expanded as goals are met and new ones identified.
Accompanying the IEP are program implementation strategies designed to meet these goals and objectives. Teachers are familiar with their students’ learning needs as well as the content of their students’ IEPs so that they provide appropriate in-class and curriculum accommodations consistent with the students’ IEPs.

The function of the Identification, Placement and Review Committee (IPRC) is to identify students who are exceptional and to recommend and review program placement.

The school In School Review Committee (ISRC) meets monthly to identify and create action plans to assist students who are experiencing difficulties at school (e.g. academic, social, emotional, or behavioural). Representation on this committee includes school administration, support staff (such as psychologist, SERT, social worker, speech and language pathologist) school special education, contact, guidance and school success teachers.
The ISRC meetings at Gordon Graydon focus on providing program and support strategies to assist the student’s academic, social and emotional progress.
The ISRC will develop an action plan to address the issues of concern about a student. Solutions may include meeting with parents, creation of a behaviour plan, modification of a student program, referral to an alternative program, referral to a community agency for counselling and support, referral to such Peel Board support staff as behaviour mobile team, psychologist, social worker, speech and language teacher.
The ISRC may recommend a student be referred to an IPRC for official designation and formal referral to a Special Education support program.

Learning Support Level I (LSI) – a credit course called Learning Strategies: Skills for Success in Secondary Schools (GLE) will be offered to students whose learning needs are significant and possibly related to a learning disability, attention difficulties and the need for remedial support in reading, writing and mathematics skills. Students can earn up to a maximum of four GLE credits towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Students in LS1 work toward attaining a GLE credit by following the Ministry of Education GLE curriculum.
Learning Support Level II (LSII) – will be offered to students to provide support and remedial assistance with their regular course work. Student progress will be monitored by Special Education teachers and reviewed regularly with subject class teachers. Specific program accommodations will be outlined in the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).
Students placed in LS2 receive ongoing monitoring and support in all academic areas. The Learning Strategies Teacher monitors progress.
An IEP is developed in collaboration with classroom teachers for all students in Learning Support Levels 1 & 2.

The Peel District School Board offers English as a Second Language (ESL) programs for newcomers to Canada whose first language (or mother tongue) is not English. The goal is to strengthen listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students are expected to attend their home school as determined by the board's official school boundaries. To find out what school your teen should attend, visit the Student Transportation of Peel Region eligibility webpage.
We have many excellent schools in the Peel District School Board. If you are making the decision about what area to move to, I would suggest you consider the type of community or neighbourhood that would best meet your family's entire needs. Once you have identified two or three possible communities within Peel that meet your needs, then look at the school(s) for each area. Contacting each school directly for more information about what they offer will give you more information on which to base your final decision. When you contact each school, you may want to ask for the following types of information:
• the school's success plan
• the EQAO action plan
• the annual report to the community
• parent handbook
• copies of the school newsletter
• information about how parents are involved in the school
• the school council's annual report

The Ontario Student Record (OSR) is an ongoing, confidential record of a student’s education progress. Authorized by the Education Act and protected by the Freedom of Information Act and Protection of Privacy Act, an OSR is established for each student enrolled in an Ontario elementary or secondary school. The record is housed at the student’s current school and moves with the student as they transition from one school to the next. If a student leaves Peel to attend another school in Ontario, the OSR is forwarded to the new school upon request. If the OSR is not requested or the student leaves Ontario, the OSR is housed in the last Peel school that the student attended.
The OSR contains familiar documents that parents can view at any given time. OSR contents include:
- biographical data
- documentation file, containing (if applicable): verification of a custody arrangement, change-of-name order, placements decisions, suspension letters, psycho-educational assessment report, identification and placement decision letters, and registration forms
- information concerning special health conditions\
- name(s) of student’s parent(s) or guardian(s)
- Ontario Student Transcript (secondary school only) – the cumulative record of a student’s successful completion of secondary school courses
- photographs may also be attached
- record of the student’s accumulated instruction in French as a second language, if applicable
- report cards
- school(s) attended
Every student, and parents or guardians of students under 18 years of age have the right to examine the student’s OSR and receive a copy of its contents. Supervisory officers, school administration and teachers may also access a student’s OSR for the purpose of improving the instruction of the student. Written permission is requested for any outside agency or personnel to access the OSR.

If a student is under 18, a parent/guardian must call the school or provide a note (when returning) regarding the reason and length of time for being absent. If over 18, a student must notify the school or provide a note about the reason and length of time for being absent.

The Peel board's We Welcome the World centres provide a range of services to help make the transition to school a smooth one for newcomer students and their families. Multilingual staff are available to help with academic assessments, registration, settlement services and parent institutes in many languages.
