Welcome to Heart Lake Secondary School!
My name is Peter Koehnen and it is my privilege begin my 5th year as the principal of this great school. I hope you all have had a restful and rejuvenating summer and are excited to face the challenges and rewards of another school year.
The staff at Heart Lake are committed to helping all of our students be the best that they can be. We offer a full course selection leading to the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. We also offer a number of specialized programs, including the Regional Enhanced stream for gifted students, and two Specialized High Skills Major programs in Computer Technology and Arts & Culture.
We are excited about a number of new and upgraded facilities at the school. The most obvious of these is our brand new turf field and rubberized track. This new surface will allow our field teams to practice year round. Over the last few months we have also painted our gym, resurfaced the gym floor and installed new bleachers.
I believe that the purpose of secondary school is to develop the whole student. At Heart Lake, that development happens not only in the classroom but also through the many extra-curricular activities we offer. I have never worked in a school that offered such a wide range of opportunities for students. Our dedicated teachers spend many hours coaching, directing, and leading dozens of teams and clubs, covering interests from the arts, athletics, student government, social justice, the environment, and many others. In all of these activities, as well as in our classes, we foster the development of strong character traits. At Heart Lake we strongly believe that Character Counts.
I encourage all students to take advantage of all that your school has to offer and I urge all Heart Lake parents and guardians to stay involved in the education of your children. We would love to see you at our school concerts, dramatic presentations, sports competitions, and parent interview evenings. I would also encourage parents to consider participating on our School Council.
I am committed to serving the students and parents of the Heart Lake community. If you ever have any questions or concerns about your child's program or progress, feel free to call me at the school.
