The Physical Education department offers 18 different courses, with a variety of focuses,  all of which promote vigorous daily activity and lifelong healthy active living.  Heart Lake is fortunate to have access to a wide range of athletic facilities and offers a diverse program which offers something for everyone.  All Heart Lake students are encouraged to get involved in intramurals and interschool teams and to make healthy active living education a significant part of their high school experience.

 

 

 

 

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

 

GRADE 9

 

 

  

These courses emphasize regular participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living. Students will learn movement skills and principles, ways to improve personal fitness and physical competence, and safety and injury prevention. They will investigate issues related to healthy sexuality and the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, and will participate in activities designed to develop goal-setting, communication, and social skills.

 

 

PPL 1OF – GRADE 9 GIRLS HEALTHY ACTIVE LIVING (SPORT FOCUS)

PPL 1OM - GRADE 9 BOYS HEALTHY ACTIVE LIVING (SPORT FOCUS)

Typical activities could include archery, basketball, skating, dance, fitness, volleyball, tennis, floor hockey, ice skating, flag football, soccer, baseball and much more.

 GRADE 10

 

These courses emphasize regular participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living. Student learning will include the application of movement principles to refine skills; participation in a variety of activities that enhance personal competence, fitness, and health; examination of issues related to healthy sexuality, healthy eating, substance use and abuse; and the use of informed decision-making, conflict resolution, and social skills in making personal choices.

 

PPL 2OF – GRADE 10 GIRLS HEALTHY ACTIVE LIVING (SPORT FOCUS)

 PPL 2OM - GRADE 10 BOYS HEALTHY ACTIVE LIVING (SPORT FOCUS)

Typical activities could include volleyball, basketball, skating, strength training, lacrosse, badminton, tennis, squash, cricket, tchoukball,  track and field  and much more.

 

PAF 2OF  – GRADE 10 GIRLS  PERSONAL FITNESS (FITNESS FOCUS)

PAF 2OM – GRADE 10 BOYS PERSONAL FITNESS (FITNESS FOCUS)

These courses run primarily in our strength training room and cardio/dance studio,  students design and follow a fitness program suited to their personal fitness goals.

 

 

 

PAD 2O0 – GRADE 10 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES (OUTDOOR FOCUS)

This course includes an overnight camping trip and other activities like mountain biking, orienteering, low ropes, indoor rock climbing , in-line skating, and cross country skiing.

 

PAR 2O0 – GRADE 10 RHYTHM AND MOVEMENT (DANCE FOCUS)

Movement to music is the primary focus of this new course, students will learn a variety of dance styles and will choreograph and perform dances of their own design.

 

GRADE 11

These courses focus on the development of a healthy lifestyle and participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that have the potential to engage students’ interest throughout their lives. Students will be encouraged to develop personal competence in a variety of movement skills and will be given opportunities to practise goal-setting, decision-making, social, and interpersonal skills. Students will also study the components of healthy relationships, reproductive health, mental health, and personal safety.

 

PPL 3OF – GRADE 11 GIRLS HEALTHY ACTIVE LIVING (SPORT FOCUS)

PPL 3OM – GRADE 11 BOYS HEALTHY ACTIVE LIVING (SPORT FOCUS)

Typical activities could include floorball, basketball, cross country skiing, lacrosse, fitness, tennis, squash, rugby, flag football,  baseball  and much more.

 

PAF 3OF  – GRADE 11 GIRLS  PERSONAL FITNESS (FITNESS FOCUS)

PAF 3OM – GRADE 11 BOYS PERSONAL FITNESS (FITNESS FOCUS)

These courses run primarily in our strength training room and cardio/dance studio,  students design and follow a fitness program suited to their personal fitness goals.

 

PAD 3O0 – GRADE 11 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES (OUTDOOR FOCUS)

This course includes a 3 day overnight camping trip; students will experience a variety of outdoor activities with numerous opportunities to expand their leadership skills.

 

GRADE 12

These courses focus on the development of a personalized approach to healthy active living through participation in a variety of sports and recreational activities that have the potential to engage students’ interest throughout their lives. Students will develop and implement personal physical fitness plans. In addition, they will be given opportunities to refine their decision making, conflict-resolution, and interpersonal skills, with a view to enhancing their mental health and their relationships with others.

 

PPL 4OF – GRADE 12 GIRLS HEALTHY ACTIVE LIVING (SPORT FOCUS)

PPL 4OM – GRADE 12 BOYS HEALTHY ACTIVE LIVING (SPORT FOCUS)

Typical activities could include tournament design and operation, leadership

opportunties with junior grades, fitness testing techniques, and a wide range of sports.

 

 

 

PAF 4O0  – GRADE 12  PERSONAL FITNESS (FITNESS FOCUS)

This course is offered in a co-educational format; students will refine their skills knowledge while working toward reaching their personal fitness goals.

 

PLF 4M0   - RECREATION AND FITNESS LEADERSHIP (LEADERSHIP FOCUS)

This course focuses on the development of leadership and coordination skills related to recreational activities. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills required to plan, organize, and implement recreational events. They will also learn how to promote the value of physical fitness, personal well-being, and personal safety to others through mentoring. The course will prepare students for college programs in recreational, leisure, and fitness leadership.  This course is offered in a co-educational format.

 

PSK 4UO – KINESIOLOGY (ACADEMIC/SCIENCE FOCUS)

This course focuses on the study of human movement and of systems, factors, and principles involved in human development. Students will learn about the effects of physical activity on health and performance, the evolution of physical activity and sports, and the factors that influence an individual’s participation in physical activity. The course prepares students for university programs in physical education, kinesiology, recreation, and sports administration.

 

 

 

INTRAMURALS

 

A wide variety of intramurals are offered throughout the school year before and after school hours and during our common lunch period.  Please consult the intramural bulletin board and video postings for the dates and times of the activities
