‚ÄčENG1D0  Grade 9 Academic English

This course develops the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills necessary for academic success and is intended for students working near or at the provincial standard of seventy per cent in language. You will study literature from different  historical periods, including a Shakespeare play and modern works from other English speaking countries. You will also consider non-fiction, and do oral, written and visual assignments to communicate your understanding, while displaying your own creativity. Success in this course requires the completion of daily homework, and it is the ideal preparation for the Grade 10 academic course, which leads to university or college level courses in the senior grades.

ENG1P0  Grade 9 Applied English

This course is designed to improve essential language skills needed for success in high school and daily life. Improving reading and writing skills to meet provincial standards is a focus. You will be given strategies to help understand texts and to communicate ideas clearly, both in speaking and in writing.  You will study a variety of texts, both fiction and non-fiction. This course prepares you for the Grade 10 applied English course and leads to college or workplace preparation courses in the senior grades.

ENG1L0   Grade 9  Locally Developed English

This course is designed to improve basic literacy skills, to help prepare students for success in daily life and the workplace. The course focuses on developing the essential skills in communicating clearly: listening, talking, reading, writing and media viewing. Assignments will be practical, and related to daily experience. This course leads to the Grade 10 LDCC course.

Prerequisite:  None

 

 

ENG2D0 Grade 10 Academic English

This course is designed for students at or near the provincial standard of seventy percent. It is the prerequisite for English 3U0, which means that any student considering university should enrol in this course.  You will study literary texts from different periods and countries, including a play by Shakespeare.  You will analyse and produce non-fiction and visual media texts. Finally, you will have an opportunity to improve your oral communication skills, as well as the skills involved in creative and analytic writing. The literary essay is a major assignment. Daily homework should be expected.

ENG2P0 Grade 10 Applied English

This course is designed to improve the fundamental literacy skills needed for success in high school and can lead to community college. You will improve your  literacy skills through reading, listening, writing and speaking. You will study both fiction and non-fiction in both traditional and visual forms . The assignments are often practical, and class time is generally given for the completion of work.

Prerequisite:  ENG 1D0 or ENG 1P0

 

 

ENG2L0  Grade 10 Locally Developed English

This course builds on the skills developed in the Grade 9 Locally Developed course, and will help you to attain the basic literacy skills essential for life in modern society. Readings and assignments tend to be based on practical tasks. This course leads to the Grade 11 Workplace class.

Prerequisite:  ENG1L0, ENG1P0 or ENG1D0

 

 

ENG3U0  Grade 11 University Preparation English

This course is intended for students working at the provincial standard of seventy per cent or higher who are considering university.  Increased emphasis is on developing a formal academic writing style based on a variety of texts from a range of historical periods. The core texts include a novel and a Shakespearean play, but short stories, poetry, visual media will also be examined. You will be able to demonstrate your understanding and creativity through a variety of oral and written assignments. You should be prepared to do daily homework. This course is required for the Grade 12 University Preparation course.

Prerequisite:  ENG2D0

 

 

ENG3C0  Grade 11 College Preparation English

This course will focus on developing the oral, reading, writing and media literacy skills necessary for success in high school and college. You will study many different fictional and informational texts, as well as visual and social media. Assignments are often more practical than in the university preparation course, and you will often be encouraged to relate the texts to current societal issues. You will also have assignments requiring a more formal academic style.  In-class time to complete assigned work is often given, although some homework can be expected.

Prerequisite:  ENG2P0 or ENG2D0

 

 

ENG3E0  Grade 11 Workplace Preparation English

This course is designed for students who intend to go directly to work from high school. Texts and assignments will be based on developing the reading and writing skills essential for functioning  in modern society.

Prerequisite:  ENG2P0, ENG2D0 or ENG2L0

 

 

ENG4U0  Grade 12 University Preparation English

This is the required English course for admission into university. The Advanced Placement English or Enhanced English may be taken instead.  It is designed for students achieving at or near the provincial standard of seventy percent in English 3U0 and will be an extremely challenging course for students not performing at that level. The emphasis in the university preparation course is on refining a formal academic writing style and presenting logical, supported arguments in an essay. The development of research skills essential for post-secondary success will also be stressed. In addition to the core novel and Shakespeare play, you will study visual media, poetry, and essays. You will develop oral confidence through class discussion and seminars. This course has a demanding workload, and daily homework can be expected.

ENG4C0  Grade 12 College Preparation English

This course is designed for students who plan to attend college rather than university. The focus is on the continued development of reading and writing skills essential for success in college and everyday life. Many assignments are more practical in nature than in the university preparation course, and you will often be encouraged to relate the texts to modern social events and issues. More in-class time with teacher support is generally available for assignments in college level courses. Different  traditional and visual texts will be examined, as will communication through social media. You will have a chance to improve your oral confidence through class discussions and student presentations.

Prerequisite:  ENG3C0 or ENG3U0

 

 

ENG4E0 Grade 12 Workplace Preparation English

This course is designed for students who intend to go directly to work from high school. Texts and assignments will be based on developing the reading and writing skills essential for functioning  in modern society.

Prerequisite:  ENG3E0 or ENG3C0

 

 

EWS4U0  Grade 12 The Writer's Craft   (Optional)

Do you keep a journal? Scribble notes on napkins? Write poems in the margins of your notes? Perhaps you have dreams of writing the great Canadian novel? The Writer's Craft gives you the chance to see how the masters of different periods and genres have created their works, but the focus is on creating your own pieces in different styles and genres. You'll benefit from feedback from fellow students, as well from the instructor.  In addition to sharing your interest in writing with like-minded classmates, you will be enhancing your language skills for future studies.

Prerequisite:  ENG U0
