June 2019

Dear John Fraser Students and Families:

Thank you for a wonderful school year.  We have so many positive memories from this past year and I thank you for supporting our wonderful school which will be celebrating its 29th year.  To those of you who are graduating this year, congratulations and I wish you a wonderful 'life after Fraser.'

To Fraser students who are returning and those who are new to our school, I welcome you and want to make sure you have all the information you need about registration at the end of the summer.  The following chart outlines the dates and times per grade:

Wednesday, August 28th Thursday, August 29th
Grade 12:  (10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.)Grade 10:  (10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.)
Grade 11:  (1:00 to 2:30 p.m.)Grade 9 & Newcomers:  (1:00 to 2:30 p.m.)

I encourage all returning and new students to attend this excellent registration session. Students will be able to pay their School Activity Fee, get their photo taken and receive their student ID card, pick up their course selection information, receive information about retrieving individual timetables electronically, and take a school tour.  Parents who are able to attend can meet the new principal, Mrs. Kaukab, in the library where she will be reviewing key information for the coming school year.

At Fraser, we take pride in providing a wide range of extra-curricular activities which offer students opportunities outside their academic classes.  Extra-curricular involvement is key to student success.  Often these experiences become the most memorable part of a student's school career.  At Fraser, there are over 80 clubs, teams and activities for students which meet a wide variety of interests including academic, athletic, artistic, technological and leadership development.  Please see our website for further information:  www.jfss.caThese enhancements are not part of the education funding that we receive, so we ask that each student pay a School Activity Fee to enable us to continue to provide these opportunities.

The annual Student Activity Fee ($35.00) is collected to support athletics, the arts, clubs, activities and special events.  Approximately $12 of this fee will be used for all whole school activities run by our Student Activity Council and the Arts Council and will be used to support a large number of Clubs such as Minga, Royal Treatment and Peer Mentoring.  See our school's website for a more comprehensive list of offerings.  Approximately $6 of the fee will be used for guest speakers, the offsetting of field trip costs and other whole school events such as assemblies, school dances, the Academic Awards Assembly and Commencement.  Approximately $17 of this fee will also help to support school athletics including the Athletic Banquet.  All Fraser students will receive a yearbook ($40.00), a photo identification card and a $5.00 print credit for use on school printers.  In addition, students will receive a lock and locker for use during the school year.  Our Student Agenda will be updated and posted on the school's website (www.jfss.ca), along with the school calendar, for all students and parents to access.  All Grade 9 families will receive a Parent Handbook and an electronic copy will be posted on the school's website for all families to access.  The School Activity Fee is therefore $80.00 in total.

For ease of payment, we have moved to an online payment system.  The online system allows you to pay using Visa/Mastercard or eCheque and automatically provides you a receipt for your records.  If you have not already done so, please follow the steps below to get registered, as the School Cash Online system will be used throughout the year to inform you of any payment requirements for your student.

  • Step 1:  Go to https://peeschools.schoolcashonline.com
  • Step 2:  Click on "Register" and follow the steps
  • Step 3:  Check your inbox for the email confirmation and click on the link inside.  Stay connected by selecting "yes" to email notifications about upcoming fees.
  • Step 4:  Click "Add Student" and fill in the required fields with your child's details as well as any other students in the household.
  • Step 5:  Pay School Activity Fee $80.00
  • For more information contact Parent Helpdesk at parenthelp@schoolcashonline.com or 1-866-961-1803

Although payment of the School Activity fee is not mandatory, we hope that we have your support and payment can be made as soon as possible so that we can begin working to plan our school activities for the coming school year.  Again, all of these program enhancements that make Fraser such a wonderful school are not part of the education funding that we receive and would not be possible without your kind support.  Please remember to bring your receipt to registration as proof of payment.  Note that payment can also be made by cash or a cheque payable to John Fraser Secondary School.  However, to avoid long lineups on registration day, families are encouraged to pay in advance online.

We know some families at our school may need additional support in order to ensure their teens are able to benefit from the program enhancements offered.  We never want a student to feel excluded.  We have a confidential process to help families ask for support – we want you to feel comfortable coming to us.  If you need support, please call a school administrator to discuss your situation.

On Tuesday, September 3rd, students in Grades 9-12 will attend their four classes with shortened periods from 9:00 a.m. to 11:02 a.m. This first day of classes is a special day for Grade 9 students as they will be involved in orientation and team building activities from 11:02 a.m. to 2:46 p.m.  Wednesday, September 4th is a regular school day for all grades.

Any returning students who do not attend September registration and orientation may register on the first day of school in the cafeteria, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

We are also committed to helping students make a positive transition to our school and to feel welcome and comfortable here.  Please remember that you can get help from all teachers, Guidance Counsellors and from our specially trained Peer Mentors throughout your years at Fraser.

We have much to be proud of at John Fraser S.S.  I know that 2019-20 will be an exciting school year filled with many wonderful memories.  It has been my pleasure serving this school as principal.  I wish all Fraser students and families a great summer and a wonderful new school year.

Sincerely
