The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a ministry-approved specialized program. At Mississauga Secondary School it allows grade 11 and 12 students to focus their learning in the Health and Wellness sector.
Students not only meet the requirements to graduate from secondary school but also take with them many unique experiences such as sector-recognized certifications and work experiences.
It is available to students in all skill levels and in all pathways. It also assists in their transition after graduation to apprenticeship training, college, university or the workplace.
Specialist High Skills Major students are involved in the following 4 components:
- Bundle of Credits (including co-op)
- Certification and Training
- Experiential Learning and Career Exploration
- Reach Ahead Opportunities
Upon completion of the program students earn an embossed red seal of distinction on their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. This seal is recognized by many employers and post-secondary institutions indicating that a student has participated in specialized, career focused programming.
