Custom woodworking

This course enables students to develop knowledge and skills related to cabinet making and furniture making. Students will gain practical experience using a variety of the materials, tools, equipment, and joinery techniques associated with custom woodworking. Students will learn to create and interpret technical drawings and will plan, design, and fabricate projects. They will also develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to the woodworking industry, and will explore apprenticeships, postsecondary training, and career opportunities in the field that may be pursued directly after graduation.

 

Construction Technology

This course enables students to develop technical knowledge and skills related to woodworking, carpentry, electrical systems, and plumbing for residential construction. Students will gain hands-on experience using a variety of materials, processes, tools, and equipment to design, lay out, and build projects. They will create and read technical drawings, learn construction terminology, interpret building codes and regulations, and apply mathematical skills as they develop construction projects. Students will also develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to construction technology, and will explore postsecondary and career opportunities in the field.

 

Communication Technology

Communications Technology is a course based in digital media, focusing on Video Production, Photography & Graphic Design. Using high quality HD video cameras, students learn how to shoot and edit professional quality TV segments, short documentaries, and narrative films.

In the Photography unit, students learn how to compose artistic photographs using the Principles of Photography and the Rule of Thirds. We discuss lighting, shallow depth of field, and how to shoot action shots using a fast shutter.

While creating graphic design projects in graphic design, including movie posters, magazine covers and online blogs, students have the opportunity to learn how to use Adobe Photoshop to its fullest.

Students will complete the course with an online final portfolio that will allow them to showcase their work. digitally, to post-secondary institutions, prospective employers, or for personal or entrepreneurial purposes.
