Important information for families regarding ETFO and OSSTF job action

​As we have previously shared, Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario has announced provincial job action in elementary schools across Ontario starting Tuesday, Nov. 26. Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation is also in a legal strike position, but haven’t announced any job action at this time. At this time, ETFO has announced that its job action will target the Ministry of Education and school board administrative tasks that do not impact students. Schools, childcare centres, and before- and after-school programs remain open.

Testing for lead in school water sources

​​Recently, some news outlets have reported about lead levels found in drinking water in Ontario schools. It is important that we clarify that the Peel District School Board's test results shared in these articles are from the 2016-17 and 2017-18 school years, and have already been resolved. All of our elementary and secondary schools are currently in compliance with requirements of Ontario's Safe Drinking Water Act.​

Use of personal devices in Peel District School Board schools

​On Nov. 4, 2019, the Ministry of Education introduced a restriction on the use of personal mobile devices, such as cellphones, in the classroom. It's being referred to as a "cellphone ban" in the media, however, the ministry's direction does allow personal devices to be used for instructional purposes, as directed by an educator. Exceptions are also made if cellphones are required for health or medical purposes, to support special education needs. This direction aligns with the Peel District School Board's current practice and, as such, there is no​ change to the use of technology in Peel schools.​

Peel schools recognize Indigenous Heritage Month and Hindu Heritage Month in November

Throughout November, schools across the Peel District School Board will recognize and celebrate Indigenous Heritage Month and Hindu Heritage Month. Schools will participate in a number of activities to honour the rich culture, heritage, contributions and diversity of First Nation, Inuit and Métis communities across Canada,  Hindu Canadians, and Hindu communities from around the world.
