Johannah Abrams - PAS North
Winning posters were compiled into a plaque and are displayed at each PAS site.
Activities observing Balck History Month:
PAS West students created a Bulletin Board under the guidance of teacher Joanna Zurowski. Samantha Cain, a student at PAS and student chair, was the driving force behind the project.
Jamal Baksh, a student at PAS North created a painying reflectin struggles that black people worldwide are struggling to overcome, such as slavery, starvation and poverty. In Jamal's words: 'I wentr through some similar struggles as the children depicted in the paining. I grew up with just a mother to take care of me. Sometimes it was hard to ask her to buy things that I wanted as a kid. I also knew what it was like to be hungry and not be happy.
Black History Month remenids us that there are black children and youth that styill need help. I scaled up the images of children in the painting so that the viewer would feel as though they were part of the scene depicted. I used both warm and cool colours and layers of value to show form in the figures. My paining conveys a sad mood because, as a child, I felt hungry and unhappy.
International Women's Day sponsored by PCAWA:
PAS North graduates, Preet Chohan and Sheena Sharma, presented their films and participated afterward in a question and answer forum.
Preet Chohan's file is entitled 'Mirror, Mirror' and deals with eating disorders. "Breaking the Silence' by Sheena Sharma focuses on violence and silence in the South Asian community.
