Letter from Director of Education regarding cancelled Literacy Test on Oct. 20, 2016

On Oct. 20, Peel secondary schools, like other secondary schools across Ontario, had planned for some or all grade 10 and previously eligible students to take an online version of the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). Unfortunately, the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) experienced significant, widespread technical difficulties with their online OSSLT network that prevented students from completing the test. As a result, EQAO cancelled the OSSLT assessment on Oct. 20, 2016 for all participating schools throughout the province.

Information regarding the early writing of the online Literacy Test (OSSLT)

All eligible students at Rick Hansen will be writing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) online earlier in the school year on Oct. 20, 2016. The test will be facilitated in a classroom using technology provided by the school.

The OSSLT measures whether or not students are meeting the minimum standard for literacy across all subjects up to the end of Grade 9. Successful completion of the literacy test is one of the requirements to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

There is no disadvantage to taking the test early. If successful, the pass will count towards their OSSD. If unsuccessful, students can complete the test again on March 30, 2017, as first-time eligible students.

There will be a letter home to parents in the upcoming weeks outlining the schedule for the day.  Any students who are not writing the OSSLT On October 20 will not attend school.

All students can also practice for the literacy test online at www.eqao.com.
