Experiences Beyond Rick Hansen

Education and learning can occur outside the classroom. Below are a number of links to opportunities for you to explore that will enrich your life experiences.

Central Ontario Leadership Seminar
The anchor of the program is the three day long Central Ontario Leadership Seminar (COLS). Each May over 120 student ambassadors and more than 40 volunteer staff and alumni gather together for a weekend long seminar designed to teach young leaders (specifically, grade 10 students) how to think, not what to think. Through teambuilding, creative problem solving, interactive informational panels, motivational speakers, and social forums our dynamic program encourages the student ambassadors to think critically, go out on a limb and think 'outside of the box'.

International Exchange (See your Guidance counsellor for details)
Rick Hansen Secondary School has been involved in an international exchange with the Sophianum School in the Netherlands since 2007. It provides students with the opportunity to participate in an international exchange program which can enhance their ability to become global active citizens and to develop international links.
Several other international exchange opportunities exist for students. See the bulletin board outside the Counselling area.

Lattitude
For 35 years Lattitude has specialised in volunteering for 17-25 year-olds. Are you looking for a truly ethical way to spend your gap year? Looking for a trip with a difference? Then maybe you could be one of the many volunteers we place around the world each year.

Outward Bound
An Outward Bound expedition is more than just canoeing, kayaking and mountaineering. It's an adventure in the classic sense of the word. It's about dealing with the unknown. It's about meeting challenges. And it's about learning. Learning about yourself, about others, about the environment, and most of all, about your potential.

Shad Valley
Shad Valley is a four week summer enrichment program. Students spend a month living in residence at one of our host university campuses across Canada. The program is offered to students currently completing grade 10, 11 or 12. With a focus that includes the sciences, technology and entrepreneurship, the program provides an academically stimulating, mind expanding adventure for top well-rounded students. Students will also enjoy recreational activities and the opportunity to explore local attractions.

Volunteer Opportunities
A list of volunteer opportunities is available at this link in the Students - 40 Hours section.

Students entering grade 9 must complete 40 hours of volunteer work as one of the ministry requirements for their high school diploma. The aim is to encourage students to become actively involved in making positive contributions to their community. Students are encouraged to complete the 40 hours of community service as early as possible in high school-ideally by the end of grade 10.
