Under One Woof - Dog Daycare
West Credit offers a unique program for students who like dogs. It is a 4 credit package where students earn a business credit and 3 cooperative education credits. Some students are eligible for a dual credit program with Sheridan College where they can work towards a diploma in Animal Care!
We spend 2 days a week learning about business and dog theory and 3 days taking care of the dogs and the dog business. Students gain many transferable skills which they can use in their job search. Many graduates are working in the field of animal care – daycares, veterinary clinics, grooming and pet stores. Students have even decided to exercise their entrepreneurial skills and take up dog walking and dog sitting.
Students are exposed to a range of guest speakers who work with animals – we call this part of the program Jobs with Dogs and Dogs with Jobs! Every week they learn about dog training using positive reinforcement with Joan Orr, internationally renowned clicker training expert. Students also learn how to groom dogs with Helen McKeand, Sheridan College instructor and owner of her own grooming business for more than 20 years.
We have practical assessments at an off leash dog park and in school we create toys for our dogs. We attend the Royal Winter Fair and the Toronto Sportsmen's Show to watch amazing animal shows and learn about small businesses in Canada.
