Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to need to have prior experience on a band instrument?
No. Though some students come in with some piano experience, having any music experience in the past is not necessary. In September, all students enrolled in the instrumental program will learn/review reading notes. Once the instruments arrive, all students will be taught how to set up, hold, and play their instrument from the very beginning. No need to worry!
Who do I pay for the rental of an instrument?
All payments are made directly to Cosmo Music using a credit card. Please go to amartin.cosmomusic.ca to pay for the rental. Please ensure you pay by August 1st. Please refer to the music form for the website.
When are Instrument Selection Forms due?
All forms must be submitted to Allan A. Martin by May 3rd, 2019.
What instruments can I choose from?
In a band, the following instruments are used:
Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, and Percussion. Percussion and saxophone assignments are limited in numbers. (Students must have at least 4 years of experience either on piano or have taken/currently take private drum lessons to be considered).
What if I already have experience on one particular instrument?
If you already have experience on one of the band instrument and would like to continue playing the said instrument, please indicate it on the form.
What if I would like to play an instrument not listed?
Unfortunately, in order to maintain a consistent band program, other instruments such as guitar, piano, and violin are not part of the instrumental band music program.
When will my son/daughter know which instrument they have been assigned to play?
Each student chooses minimum four instruments and they will be assigned one based on their choice. Please do not rank or number the instrument choices. When the student arrives to school in September, they will have an instrument waiting for them at the school.
What if the family already owns one of the band instruments? Does my child still need to rent an instrument?
If the family already own one of the band instruments and is in a playable and good condition, they do not need to rent an instrument- unless they wish to play a different instrument. Please indicate this on the instrument selection form.
Why should I pay $230.00 to rent an instrument each year when I can buy an inexpensive instrument? After all, they're only just starting out.
Any beginning player needs a good instrument. Cosmo Music only rents high quality, well-maintained instruments. A Cosmo representative visits the school once a week to repair and make adjustments to any instruments that require attention. When parents purchase inexpensive instruments for their child, almost without exception are poorly made instrument which causes t he instruments are often out of tune (and very difficult to tune), difficult to make a good sound/tone. Often times these instruments due to poor construction do not last long and can be costly to get it repaired or will need to be replaced as sometimes repair centres cannot/will not repair instruments. If it is your wish to purchase an instrument, please contact us to discuss which brands are preferable.
