Resources and Supports for Students and Families to Understand and Respond to Anti-Black Racism

Dear Peel District School Board Students and Families,

I am writing, first and foremost, to acknowledge the pain and struggle many have been feeling these past few weeks and to provide some helpful resources and supports as we work to address and eliminate anti-Black racism.

We know that for Black students, staff and families in our community, recent events are neither abstract nor distant. We have witnessed acts of violence and have seen anti-Black racism play out in communities across North America, as well as locally. And the Ministry Review made it very clear that we have participated in perpetuating anti-Black racism in education, and we have our own work to do in the Peel District School Board to eliminate anti-Black racism and other forms of systemic discrimination.

We see the significant weight and impact that these local and global realities have had, and continue to have, on members of the Black community and other marginalized individuals. We acknowledge the hurt, trauma and pain caused by these recent events, and are reaching out to provide support.

We humbly offer these resources and supports as a potential starting point to help support mental health and well-being, and to provide a deeper understanding of anti-Black racism. We hope that you will find them helpful. For additional support, please contact your Principal or Vice-Principal to access the board's social work or psychology teams.

Thank you and please continue to take care of yourselves and each other.
