Dear Central Peel Secondary School Students and Families:
I hope you are staying well during these challenging times.
I am writing to you today to make you aware of a situation involving the Principal at Central Peel Secondary School. In a discussion related to the placement of students in regional programs, Principal DeMaeyer made a comment that was xenophobic and racist. She immediately recognized that her statement was hurtful and discriminatory, and apologized for the remark.
Given the concerns this situation raises with respect to the Peel District School Board's Safe and Accepting Schools Policy 48 and our responsibility to provide safe and inclusive places to learn and work, senior administration has assigned Principal DeMaeyer to home, pending the outcome of an investigation. This means that an Acting Principal will be placed at Central Peel while the investigation is being conducted by an external investigator and an outcome is decided.
As this is a personnel matter, I cannot disclose any further details as they are confidential between the board and those involved, including the Principal. Confidentiality can sometimes be perceived as a lack of care and accountability, but I want to assure the Central Peel community that this matter is being taken very seriously by Peel board senior administration.
Discriminatory remarks are upsetting and hurtful, and never acceptable. As outlined in the Peel board's Safe and Accepting Schools Policy 48, we must always honour the rights of others by "refraining from actions that may be motivated by bias, prejudice or hate against identifiable groups."
We want every member of our school communities to know that they belong and that they are welcome. Your safety, success and well-being are key priorities. If you have any questions or concerns about this matter, please contact my office at 905-890-1010 ext. 2006.
