English Language Learners
The ELL department is committed to student success by using a variety of teaching methods encompassing all English skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening). The lessons are interactive and focus on both individual and group learning. In the early language acquisition courses, an effort is made for students to be successfully integrated into the Canadian School system. All students work on developing language skills through short stories, a novel study, and the creation of a portfolio. In the later levels there is an added focus on enhancing their literacy skills for the OSSLT, and supporting language in other classes. The main goal is for students to be well-prepared to be integrated into the mainstream English program and secondary school as a whole.
ESL courses are not based on age or grade level but instead each student is placed according to their own needs and abilities determined through a Steps to English Proficiency Framework.
