Changes to inclement weather protocol to keep schools safe
To help keep our schools safe, we have updated our inclement weather protocol for the 2020-21 school year. On days when buses are cancelled or schools are closed due to inclement weather, impacted students will engage in online learning at home.
During the winter months, there may be times when it is necessary to cancel buses or close schools due to severe snow or ice conditions. In the past, when buses were cancelled, schools remained open to staff and students who could arrive safely. In these instances, classrooms would often be combined to ensure there was adequate supervision. Currently, this practice does not align with COVID-19 guidance and direction from Peel Public Health and the Ministry of Education, as it could lead to students and staff from different cohorts interacting with each other.
As you know, the health and safety of staff and students is our utmost priority. To help keep our schools safe, we have updated our inclement weather protocol for the 2020-21 school year.
What has changed?
Bus cancellation daysOn days when buses are cancelled for part or all of Peel region, in-class instruction will also be cancelled for schools in affected municipalities. Please do not send your child to school when buses are cancelled in your area.
Instead, impacted staff and students will engage in learning at home with the goal that learning will be synchronous (live), where possible. Students enrolled in the online learning model will continue with their regular school routines. More information about online learning during inclement weather days will be shared by your child's educator and/or principal.
In addition, when buses are cancelled:
- Child care programs will remain open. Please check with your child care provider for details.
- Board administrative offices will remain open.
- Schools will remain open to custodial and other central Peel board staff only to perform essential duties to ensure the facility is ready for the following day.
Full system closure daysIn the rare instance that it is unsafe to operate and open schools due to severe inclement weather, we will announce that school buildings and board offices are closed to all students and staff for the day.
On these inclement weather days, students who would typically attend school in person will engage in learning at home with the goal that learning will be synchronous (live) where possible. Students enrolled in the online learning model will continue with their regular school routines.
All in-person activities at board offices and schools, including child care, will be cancelled.
How will we know if buses are cancelled or schools are closed?
During inclement weather days, the decision to close schools or cancel buses will be shared by 6:15 a.m. on the board's Facebook
accounts. Information regarding cancellations or closures will also be available through:
If no closures or cancellations have been announced by 6:15 a.m., buses are running and schools are open.
We understand that this is yet another change to your school year, but we feel it is a necessary decision to help maintain safe and healthy schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you for your continued support and understanding.
