Welcome to the SHSM Health and Wellness Page!

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs in Arts and Culture, and in Health and

Wellness provide exciting opportunities for students to gain valuable industry-recognized

skills, career-relevant training, certifications, experiential learning, and reach-ahead

opportunities at colleges, universities, apprenticeships, and the workplace.  Students who

complete this Ministry of Education-approved program earn the SHSM red seal on their high

school diploma.

As of September 2013, The Woodlands School now offers the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Health and Wellness Program, in addition to being a regional gifted program centre.

The SHSM Health and Wellness program is a very special ministry-approved specialized initiative that allows ALL students to participate to help them foster a career in the health and wellness sector (child care and family services, fitness, health care) upon graduation from secondary school. Students are required to obtain 7 sector-recognized certifications and training (including Standard First Aid, CPR – Level C, Infection Control, and WHMIS), 9 specific credits in their Grade 11 and 12 years in high school, participate in experiential learning activities related to the sector such as specially-designed field trips to The Ontario Science Centre and Riverwood Conservancy, learn essential skills and work habits required in the sector from their mandatory co-op work placements, and finally, reach ahead experiences connected with post-secondary pathways and institutions such as communicating with special guest speakers from the health and wellness sector.
